Traffic disruption on major Nottingham routes for tree works

Nottingham City Council is warning of potential disruption as it carries out major tree works on three key traffic routes in the city over the next three weeks.

The work on Lenton Boulevard, Castle Boulevard and Derby Road is planned to take place between 20 February and 10 March. The works are likely to affect residents as well as road users and pedestrians in the area but to minimise this, the work will be carried out during off-peak hours.

These works are essential to ensure that the health and safety of the trees is maintained and the potential for tree‐related damage and problems affecting people in the city is minimised.

The work will help to maintain healthy tree structures, ensure clearances for road traffic and pedestrians and maintain clearances from properties, street lighting and road signage.

The timing of the closures for Lenton Boulevard (20th – 24th Feb 2023), Castle Boulevard (27th Feb – 5th March 2023) and Derby Road (6th – 10th March 2023), have been agreed upon following liaison between the council’s tree officers and Highways Management.

The highways management team will be installing mobile electronic signage leading up to the works to notify road users of the upcoming closures.

People travelling through the area are being advised that delays are likely and they should consider using alternative routes if possible. Some bus services using Derby Road will be affected – details of diversions and any bus stop changes will be available from bus operators.

Councillor Audra Wynter, Portfolio Holder for Highways, Transport and Parks, said: “These works to cut back some of the larger and stronger growing trees in the area are vital to the health of the trees and to the safety of road users, pedestrians and residents.

“There are constraints on the timing of this work but we have aimed to coordinate it to minimise disruption, including carrying it out during off-peak times. However, these are major routes which means delays are likely, so anyone who usually uses these routes are advised to consider alternatives while the works are underway.

“We recognise the important role of trees to provide homes for nature and improve the appearance of urban spaces and we continue with our ongoing commitment to plant 50,000 new trees by the end of the year.”
