Does anyone remember Hooley’s Garage in West Bridgford in the 70s – a rally car and a real lion?

A resident who left the area is researching and looking for photos and memories of this time.

The car dealership, possible Bristol Street Motors would have been where the ( now closed ) Carphone Warehouse is on Loughborough Road.

Colin Abott told us:

‘I moved to West Bridgford in May 1970 as a 6-year-old and attended Heyman County Primary School. My mother worked at the Gem, now Asda.

‘Before we moved away from Branston Gardens in 1973 I remember going to a Ford car dealers in 1972, situated on the junction of Loughborough Rd and Eton Rd.

‘Possibly Bristol Street Motors? On display they had a Ford Escort 1600, it had won the 1972 East Africa Safari Rally. It was driven by a Finnish rally star, Hannu Mikkola.

‘Also in the dealers was a live lion in a cage and everytime we went in to ogle at this magnificent beast and this car that I thought was world famous, we were given free cans of Coca Cola.

‘I have never found any reference to this since the memories came to me yesterday.
I was able to track down a photo of that very car and a 1:18 scale model I have purchased.’

If anyone remembers this or better still has any images email us at newsdesk@westbridgfordwire.com.
