Doodle Dave inspires Tollerton Primary School’s Environmental Art Week

Children at Tollerton Primary School have been enjoying Environmental Art Week which has been made very special by a three-day visit from Dave Draws, a freelance illustrator, mural artist and serial map doodler, who has travelled the world sharing his unique style of art.

The Tollerton doodle map is the result of suggestions by children and staff of landmarks locally, nationally and internationally which are of significance to the school.

Many children entered a competition to add their own landmark to the map and these include places on the doorstep such as Tollerton School, Tollerton Airport and the local park, to those a little further afield including Green’s Windmill, our famous football and cricket grounds and County Hall to those miles away.

Deputy Headteacher, Luci Gordon who was behind the project said:

“All schools work within a very structured and busy timetable but it is important that we find time for weeks such as this.

“Of course, it is vital that we ensure all of our children leave us with a really secure foundation in Maths and English, but we also have a duty to enable children to explore other subjects at a deeper level.

“I know this week will have sparked the flame in many of our children who will grow to develop a love of Art, and nothing would please me more than to see at least one of our children pursuing Art through to University.  Wouldn’t it be incredible if they cited their time with Dave as the moment that triggered their interest?”

Laura Williams, the school’s Art Lead said:

“The ideas and designs provided by the children were amazing and for them to have the opportunity to add them to the map which will take pride of place in our school hall, is fabulous.”

“Ava in Class 2 drew a picture of Wollaton Park because she had fun visiting with members of her wider family who live in Wales.  Long, in Class 5 drew a picture of Victoria Harbour in Hong Kong.

“Long was born in Hong Kong and said how beautiful it looks in both day and night.  Sebbie drew Nottingham Moderns RFC as he loves playing rugby there every Sunday and Elizabeth drew a picture of Nottingham’s National Justice Museum because it is her favourite museum to visit!
