Driver involved in deliberate hit and run caught in separate incident

A chance sighting resulted in police arresting a suspect for a deliberate hit-and-run from the night before.

Officers were attending a separate incident in the Newark area on Thursday (15 February) morning when they spotted a car.

The driver saw the police and tried to drive off, with this suspicious reaction prompting officers to pull the car over.

The Operational Support officers then ran the car’s details through the police system, which suggested the vehicle as being linked to a collision.

This took place around 8:50 pm on Wednesday (14 February), following a dispute between two men in Brunel Drive, Newark.

When this escalated, one of them reportedly got into a car and drove it at the other man, who was thrown off his feet and onto the bonnet of the vehicle.

The man was left with minor injuries as a result, while the driver left the scene of the incident soon afterwards.

A 19-year-old man was subsequently arrested on suspicion of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm, following the spot by police the next morning.

PC Matthew Wileman, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “This was a very serious incident that could’ve quite easily left the victim with life-changing injuries.

“Thankfully for everyone involved, the man who was hit by the car wasn’t more seriously hurt, although that doesn’t make what happened any more acceptable.

“The morning after this collision, our officers were attending a separate incident when they spotted someone acting suspiciously, so decided to take action.

“As a result of this stop, we were able to arrest someone we suspect of being involved in the deliberate hit-and-run, so this was a great result.

“Our officers are still in the process of investigating that incident, so we’d ask anyone with further information to call the police on 101, quoting incident 679 of 14 February 2024.”
