Nottinghamshire Police caught a driver using a mobile phone while driving along Castle Boulevard in Nottingham in July.
Rather than accept the six points and £200 fine, he opted to go to Nottingham Magistrates’ Court – before pleading guilty at the last minute on Tuesday 9 December.
He received his six points and had to pay £960 in fines and costs – as well as his own legal fees.
PC Ben Hemstock, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:
“The driver was seen using his mobile phone in rush hour and was clearly not concentrating on the road.
“He put other road users, his passenger, and himself at risk by being so reckless.
“Hands-free Bluetooth kits are no longer expensive and can be purchased for a fraction of the cost associated with getting caught.
“So if you are still thinking about some last-minute stocking fillers for Christmas, one of these kits could prove to be a wise investment.
“Because there really is no excuse for using a mobile phone whilst driving. The law is clear and has been for some years.
“So our message is simple – hands-free or pull over. There really is no in-between.”
