Drugs find in Nottingham after bus driver alerts police officers

Police discovered a large quantity of drugs and a knife on a 25-year-old suspect after being flagged down in Nottingham city centre.

Two response officers were on patrol when a bus driver approached them in Lower Parliament Street during the early hours of Thursday (28 August).

The bus driver said he had just seen two females walking after a group of males and demanding they hand back a mobile phone and passport.

The officers went looking for the group and soon saw two females shouting at a man in Thurland Street.

They searched the man and found a large quantity of cannabis and bags of white powder, suspected to be cocaine.

A lock knife was also seized from his waistband, however he was not in possession of the stolen mobile phone or passport.

The 25-year-old was therefore arrested on suspicion of possession of a bladed article in a public place, possession with intent to supply a Class A drug and possession with intent to supply a Class B drug.

The officers spoke to the two females who reported having a handbag stolen in King Street. Inquiries to trace the offender remain ongoing.

The handbag was found nearby and contained the passport but not the mobile phone.

PC Radoslaw Zygulski, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:

“We are committed to taking knives off the streets and taking action against anyone found to be carrying them.

“We’re therefore pleased to have been able to take this weapon out of harm’s way, while also seizing quantities of drugs in the process.

“This arrest is a great example of why we get out and about in the community on our patrols, which allows us to respond immediately when a matter arises.

“We’d like to thank the bus driver for alerting us to this incident and the suspect has been bailed whilst our inquiries continue.”
