E-bike rider broke police officer’s shoulder in escape bid

An e-bike rider broke a police officer’s shoulder when he barged into him in a bid to escape arrest.

Knife crime team officers were on patrol in Radford, Nottingham, on 3 June 2025 when they observed a group of drug users.

Moments later the officers spotted a high-powered electric bike being ridden by a man wearing ski goggles and a full-face balaclava.

The bike rider, later identified as Jerome Gibson, dismounted and ran.

As Gibson approached one of the officers waiting to detain him in Hucknall Road, he was seen to lean forward and shoulder barge into him.

The officer later required surgery to his shoulder injuries.

The offender fled into a property and left the Nottingham area for a number of days before officers tracked him down to an address in Bilborough.

He jumped out of a rear window but was detained by officers with the assistance of PD Seth in a nearby garden.

Gibson, aged 22, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to committing grievous bodily harm without intent.

He also pleaded guilty to threats with an offensive weapon and two counts of criminal damage in Langwith Junction, Derbyshire, on 8 May 2024.

The offences, investigated by Derbyshire Constabulary, involved Gibson threatening two people with a knife and vandalising their property.

Gibson was sentenced to a total of three years and eight months in jail at Nottingham Crown Court on Monday (5 January).

Detective Constable Bethanie Foster, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:

“Gibson was so keen to flee the area he was prepared to seriously injure a police officer.

“He then went to great lengths to escape justice but was tracked down following a manhunt.

“We simply will not tolerate assaults on police officers, or other emergency workers.

“Although frontline officers, like those on the knife crime team, are prepared to place themselves in harm’s way on a daily basis, coming under attack like this while on duty is not part of the job description.

“High-powered electric bikes are a serious issue in our communities and are frequently linked to drug crime, knife crime and other offending.

“We will continue to work hard to seize and crush those being ridden illegally.”
