Ruth Edwards MP has joined regional colleagues in celebrating today’s announcement that the East Midlands Freeport has been given the green light and secured backing from the Government.

The announcement, made today in the Chancellor’s Budget statement, follows from a year of local and national campaigning by regional MPs.

An East Midlands Freeport will be the greenest and best-connected freeport in the country, generating up to 60,000 jobs and turbocharging the regional economy.

The bid was submitted on 5 February by a working group, led by the Local Enterprise Partnerships, which brought MPs, councils, businesses, private landowners and other stakeholders together to showcase the very best of the East Midlands.

Three sites across Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire have been identified, with the potential for growth and development across the three counties extending far beyond. These sites will receive customs and tax benefits, along with easier planning rules for businesses to set up shop, and infrastructure funding for new and improved transport links.

The Parliamentary campaign to secure an East Midlands Freeport has been led by Ruth Edwards MP, Alicia Kearns MP and Mark Fletcher MP. Commenting on the Chancellor’s announcement, Ruth Edwards said:

“It is brilliant to hear the Chancellor recognise the strategic important of the East Midlands as an engine of economic growth.

Delivery of an East Midlands Freeport will bring an enormous boost to regional growth and attract lucrative inward investment to the area, proving that the East Midlands is an exciting place to work and do business.”

Alicia Kearns, MP for Rutland and Melton said:

“Today is a day the East Midlands’ exporters and importers will welcome. The Chancellor’s announcement of the East Midland Freeport will turbocharge our region. 60,000 new skilled jobs is the headline figure. Our businesses will be able to take advantage of exciting new export opportunities. Global Britain is a reality for Rutland and Leicestershire now.

This is a vote of confidence in the East Midlands by our Chancellor, and will help level-up the heart of our country and ensure the East Midlands leads the way in a global, and greener, Britain.”

Mark Fletcher, MP for Bolsover said:

“This is an absolute game-changer for our region’s economy. The Freeport will deliver thousands of jobs directly, but will also have huge benefits for residents and businesses across the region.

This is an absolute triumph for so many people who have fought to deliver this project. D2N2, Derbyshire County Council, other local Councils, and the MPs who have worked tirelessly for a year to make this project a reality. This has been a real team effort.

After such a difficult year, it is great to have a roadmap out of lockdown and a Freeport to deliver new jobs and investment.”
