Edward Road: Petition for parking permit scheme over concerns about City Ground and Trent Bridge parking

Residents raised concerns about the lack of available on-street parking and inappropriate behaviour by visitors.

A 67-signature petition calling for a residents’ permit scheme on Edward Road in West Bridgford was presented to Nottinghamshire County Council.

Submitted by Councillor Penny Gowland on behalf of residents, the petition highlights significant parking challenges in the area, which are exacerbated on match days at nearby sporting venues, including the City Ground and Trent Bridge.

Residents raised concerns about the lack of available on-street parking and inappropriate behaviour by visitors. The petition also points to issues arising outside of match days, with fears that parking restrictions being considered elsewhere in West Bridgford could further worsen the situation on Edward Road.

Council Response and Strategic Considerations

The County Council has acknowledged the issues faced by Edward Road residents but has emphasised the need for a broader strategic approach to parking management in West Bridgford. Officials are currently evaluating the potential impact of parking charges under consideration for several streets around the town centre. Surveys will be conducted before and 12 months after any new restrictions are implemented to assess changes in parking patterns and inform future traffic management decisions.

The council has also noted that implementing a permit scheme solely on Edward Road could displace the problem to nearby streets. Any measures would require a coordinated approach, considering a wider area and the overall parking needs of the community.

Potential for Future Permit Schemes

The council says it is aware of the pressures on parking in areas close to major sports venues, especially with the planned increase in capacity at the City Ground. To address these concerns, the council has been collaborating with Nottingham Forest Football Club and Rushcliffe Borough Council to secure funding for parking management initiatives. Once this funding is received, it could support a comprehensive parking review and the implementation of coordinated restrictions, subject to community consultation.

Edward Road may be considered for permit schemes or other measures following the results of the town centre parking charge review and depending on the priorities identified by the local community for the use of the secured funding.

•  Charges to park on eleven roads around West Bridgford centre will go ahead in New Year
