Final sign-off due for new £13 million primary school in Rushcliffe

Nottinghamshire County Council is expected to give final approval for a 315-place primary school in East Leake just days after Rushcliffe councillors gave it their backing.

The multi-million-pound school has been in the making for a number of years due to a growing need for more education places in the village.

It follows the approval and creation of hundreds of homes on the Rempstone Road development, where the new school will be based.

Outline planning permission had previously been granted for the school before Rushcliffe Borough Council’s planning committee considered and approved more detailed plans on 12 May.

And now members of the county council’s planning and rights of way committee are expected to give the school final sign-off on May 24.

The 315-place school will also feature a 26-place nursery on-site, with both facilities expected to be completed and open in September 2023 under the control of Spencer Academies Trust.

They will replace a temporary 120-place school ‘village’ currently under construction on land nearby, which will be used to tackle the growing demand for school places from September this year.

Children from the temporary school will be transferred to the new, permanent school when it opens next September.

Documents confirm the building will be two storeys and will include classrooms from nursery through to year six.

About 50 school staff are expected to be employed at the school including 10 midday supervisors and three cleaners.

A travel statement expects 46 per cent of journeys to the school will be conducted on foot, with 47 per cent to be done in a car or van.

Two per cent of pupils would arrive via a private bus, the statement estimates, with three per cent on a local bus, four per cent via bicycle and one per cent via other travel methods.

There is expected to be demand for 86 pupil places when the permanent school opens in September 2023 across all age groups, with these numbers expected to rise slowly in the coming years.

The school, documents add, will prevent a deficit of school places of as high as 257 by 2025/26 if the school was not given the go-ahead.

County council documents say: “Without the proposed permanent Millside Spencer Academy the demand for Primary places in the East Leake schools’ Planning Area, which is projected to rise rapidly, would exceed the temporary capacity being provided.

“Other schools in the East Leake area may not fill to capacity, [while] the proximity of the proposed school to new housing may offer greater appeal and parental choice may affect actual pupil numbers.”

Members of the authority’s planning and rights of way committee are recommended to give the school final approval next week.

Council estimates suggest the new school will cost £13.62 million to deliver and will be funded partly through Section 106 developer contributions and the Government’s Basic Needs Programme.
