Crews from Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire attended the incident.
The horse called Scarr had become stuck in the canal at Eastwood Lock.
Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said:
At 08:12 on Thursday 29 February the crew from Eastwood were mobilised to reports of a horse trapped in the canal at Eastwood lock.
‘We were assisted by the Animal Rescue Unit from Alfreton Community Fire Station and the Water Rescue Unit from Kingsway Community Fire Station.
‘Working together with the owner we managed to release “Scarr” from the water and he has now been checked by a vet.
‘We wish him a speedy recovery.’
