Fire service issues autumn driving warning after two-vehicle collision

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service has urged drivers to take extra care on autumn roads after crews attended a collision involving two vehicles on Monday evening.

Firefighters from Castle Donington and Loughborough attended the incident. The service’s update did not give the location of the collision or details of any injuries.

The service warned that wet roads can significantly increase stopping distances, with braking distances potentially doubling compared with dry conditions.

Drivers are being advised to reduce their speed and leave more space between their vehicle and the one ahead as conditions change.

The warning also encourages motorists to check their tyres regularly. The service said tyre performance in wet conditions can deteriorate well before the tread reaches the legal minimum of 1.6mm.

With darker mornings and evenings, drivers are being urged to allow extra time for journeys and watch for fallen leaves, standing water and slippery road surfaces.

The service reminded motorists that even familiar routes can present unexpected hazards during autumn.

“Stay safe, slow down and drive to the conditions,” it said.
