First YMCA in the UK to offer CrossFit is in Nottingham

YMCA’s around the world are known for their inclusive ethos and community vibes. Many YMCAs in America are CrossFit affiliated but YMCA gym in Nottingham is the first in the UK.

YMCA gym’s newest membership has CrossFit and strength and conditioning at its heart. Workouts on the new 1871 membership are programmed by YMCA Coaches and take place in a converted grade II listed sportshall right in the city centre.

At the start of this year YMCA gym featured their gym members in their #realgymlife campaign; stressing the importance of realism and community in their gym; the 1871 membership is no exception.

Liz Robertson, YMCA Coach said:

“We have a really great mix of people on the 1871 membership already; those looking to compete next year and some people who want to climb the stairs without getting out of breath; no one gets left behind.”

Nathaniel Soderberg, YMCA Coach, explains why he is a Coach at YMCA gym:

“I am a coach because I love people. Yes, I love deadlifts and burpees; but I love people more. That’s what I love about coaching at YMCA gym and why I enjoy programming the 1871 sessions so much. I see friendships, and community, and lives that really have been changed. It’s a privilege to coach the members here and help them become the best version of themselves.”

YMCA gym has now launched a student offer for the new 1871 membership, as well as their core membership. Students have the option to choose three months of the 1871 membership (with CrossFit, strength and conditioning, and everything included in the core membership) or 12 months core membership, for just £130.

“We think it’s important that students have access to a fitness community like this,” says Daniel Hibbert, YMCA gym Centre Manager, “It’s hard leaving home and not knowing anyone; community is important. We wanted to make even our most premium membership accessible to students and to welcome them into the YMCA gym family.”

The team are also working towards being able to offer scholarship places. These would support people who can’t afford the full price of an 1871 membership to access the programme and facilities. This is the

same way Nottinghamshire YMCA run their holiday camps; supporting children from families who can’t afford to pay the fee to enjoy adventurous, skills based activity in the school holidays.

A community feel is threaded throughout YMCA gym. Their running club recently took on Men’s Health Survival Of The Fittest, The Robin Hood Half Marathon and various 5kms and 10kms around the city.

The  running club is free to non members and members alike.

All of this, plus 24 hr access, classes like boot camp, yoga and spin, and even a free towel service make YMCA gym the perfect fitness destination for commuters and students in Nottingham.

Anyone can try a free taster session for 1871 or come along to YMCA running club. Find out more on nottsymca.com/gym. For student offers visit nottsymca.com/students.
