Residents are invited to join a unique and engaging workshop led by the Open Doors team from the National Civil War Centre at Edwinstowe Library on Tuesday, 29 October, 10.30 am to 12.30 pm.
This free event is open to participants of all ages and abilities to create their own textile artwork using fabric photographs from the extensive museum collection.
Attendees will have the chance to explore the rich history of mining in Ollerton, Edwinstowe, and Bilsthorpe through the sourced images. This creative opportunity offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, serving as perfect inspiration for the textile creations. Participants can colour, stitch, and style their own images to take home, with all materials provided for the session.
Councillor Rowan Cozens, Portfolio Holder for Heritage, Culture and the Arts at Newark and Sherwood District Council, explains the idea behind the workshops: “This is a wonderful opportunity for local residents to explore images from our archives, celebrate our local heritage, and do something creative.
“Local residents from Edwinstowe and the surrounding area can explore the local mining heritage. The pictures that have been chosen show everything from the men who worked in the mines to the equipment they used. We know the local communities are proud of their industrial heritage, and at the District Council, we want to make sure that this heritage is celebrated and not forgotten.”
This workshop is part of Open Doors, a three-year programme of events organised by Newark and Sherwood District Council and funded by Arts Council England. Its aim is to increase creative opportunities for young people and underserved groups and to become a focal point for culture across Newark and Sherwood.
Bring your creativity to Edwinstowe Library on Tuesday, 29 October, 10.30 am to 12.30 pm, and leave with a piece of textile art about your local history. No experience is necessary, just the desire to join in!
