Grantham Canal footbridge in Gamston damaged by fire

A wheelie bin that was set alight by vandals has caused significant damage to a footbridge over the Grantham Canal in Gamston.

The wooden footbridge, behind Gamston and Pierrepont School is fire-damaged after the attack.

The bridge has been closed while repairs are evaluated.

A wheelie bin was set alight which caused it to melt, the fire spread to the footbridge.

Part of the handrail has broken away because of the fire.

Jonathan Wheeler, County Councillor for West Bridgford South said:

‘Whoever is responsible for doing this is brainless and idiotic to say the least. The Borough Council and Canal and River Trust have been contacted to attend and make the bridge safe. If anyone has any information on who may be responsible please contact 101’
