One of Nottinghamshire’s largest independent pub companies completed their acquisition of The Ram on Castle Gate in Newark in June 2019.
Great Northern Inns, based in Nottingham, has added to its impressive portfolio of pubs, bars and restaurants with The Ram becoming the company’s 11th venue.
Located at 19 Castle Gate, The Ram is in the heart of historic town of Newark, close to Newark Castle. The Ram has a colourful history of being a place for people to meet and enjoy good food and wine – right back to the 15th century when a coaching inn opened on the site where the current 18th century Georgian building stands.
After years of standing empty, the Ram has been recently renovated by previous owners and is now restored to is former, elegant Georgian glory and operating as a bar and brasserie offering a wide range of drinks from real ales to fine wines with a menu featuring homecooked favourites, traditional pub fayre with a modern twist as well as tapas, pizza and afternoon tea offerings.
The new owners and operators, who have been operating bars in Nottingham for over 30 years saw great potential in the venue and plans to refresh the menu and focus on providing excellent service to the local community. Director of Great Northern Inns, David Willans, said “We have been looking to expand into new areas of Nottinghamshire and the location and huge potential of The Ram presented a fantastic opportunity for us”
Several long-standing members of the company’s management team have been brought on as partners in this new venture and Mr Willans explains “It is so rewarding that individuals we have employed for many years now have the opportunity to become partners in our new ventures and hopefully gives younger staff members incentive and insight into the values of the company.”
The Ram is continuing to operate the same hours prior to the acquisition (Sunday to Thursday 11am – 10.30pm, Friday and Saturday 11am – midnight) and food will now be served 12 – 8pm everyday, with a new menu due to be launched very soon. In addition to the bar and dining areas, the venue also boasts a delightful ballroom and a separate private dining area; perfect for weddings, birthdays, christenings and other occasions and employs a dedicated events manager to look after this side of the business.
All existing staff members have remained in employment, with several new positions created and the company hope that, as the business grows more, they will be looking to employ more staff from the local area in the future. General Manager, Glenn Anderson, said “We are excited to be bringing our expertise of running successful venues and offering excellent standards of service to the good people of Newark. We hope they will enjoy the refreshed offering at The Ram and continue to enjoy the hospitality of this historic venue”
Great Northern Inns’ others venues include The Cross Keys, Trent Navigation Inn, Southbank, Copper city centre, Copper West Bridgford, Copper Mapperley, Saltbox and most recently, The Refinery (West Bridgford).
