Owner Jo Brewer told The Wire the gallery would shut its doors for the final time on Saturday 31 January, bringing to an end a business that opened on 22 October 1998 and has been part of the local high street for more than two decades.

Jo said:  “When we opened on 22 October 1998 we didn’t know at the time just how this gallery would bring not just lots of hard work and challenges but satisfaction and the feeling of being part of the West Bridgford community,” she said.

Reflecting on the gallery’s history, Jo told The Wire: ‘When we  opened on 22 October 1998 we didn’t know at the time just how this gallery would bring not just lots of hard work and challenges but satisfaction and the feeling of being part of  the West Bridgford community.

‘Paul and I both retained original our professions so juggling the additional demands of running the gallery, work and bringing up a young family definitely kept us both on our toes.

‘We have had the pleasure of knowing so many wonderful people as customers and friends.

‘We always said if ever having the gallery wasn’t fun then that’s the time to step aside.’

‘Like so many other small independent business here in West Bridgford, we have weathered many a financial storm.

‘Dreadful periods of deep recession, the knock-on effects for our suppliers and ourselves from Brexit and, of course, the devastation to the nation and world of COVID.

‘Retail, of course, has changed much in recent years but we all rally to develop and adjust accordingly.

‘Sadly, unlike the previous challenges, the pressures on all small business today are taking the heart out of some many communities up and down the land.

‘Huge increases in business rates, which are set to jump up again in April, increased employment costs, retail rents and services charges are the all too common the major factors why the High Street is losing its character.

‘Therefore, it is with enormous sadness that Henry Brewer Gallery will be closing our doors for good on Saturday 31 January.  There are of course be substantial reductions on all items including all art work and display fixtures and fittings.

‘A truly huge Thank You to all of our kind and supportive customers and friends.’

The store is offering 50% off everything until it closes.
