A Nottingham bus driver has been hailed as a hero after saving a teenager from choking during his break near Trinity Walk on Monday, 24 February.
At around 4:30 pm Carl, a driver for Nottingham City Transport (NCT), was approached by a panicking teenager who was clutching food in one hand and pointing at his throat, clearly the boy was struggling to breathe.
Thanks to Carl’s recent training, which included first aid, he quickly recognised the signs of choking and sprang into action. Without hesitation, he performed the Heimlich manoeuvre, successfully dislodging the obstruction and allowing the teenager to breathe again. Another passer-by provided additional support with water, and once Carl was confident the teenager was safe, he calmly returned to his duties, taking over his shift on the 88 route.
A spokesperson for Nottingham City Transport said:
‘Carl’s swift and decisive actions have been widely praised, with one member of the public describing him as “brave and heroic” in a message to NCT. His quick thinking and first aid skills undoubtedly saved a life, showcasing the importance of first aid training and the value of staying calm in an emergency.
‘NCT has immense pride in Carl, his actions reflect the very best of what the company stands for—looking out for the community and being ready to help when it matters most.
‘Well done, Carl, for your heroic efforts! Your bravery and quick response have made a lasting impact and serve as an inspiration to us all.’
