HRH Duke of Gloucester to unveil Commonwealth Plaque at Victoria Embankment

The Duke of Gloucester, will be joined by the Lord Lieutenant, High Sheriff, High Commissioner representatives, City Mayor, County Chairman, and representatives from all Borough and District Councils.

A special ceremony to unveil a Commonwealth plaque will take place on Wednesday, 12 March 2025, at the Nottingham City War Memorial, Victoria Embankment, NG2 2AA.

This significant event aims to commemorate the invaluable service and sacrifice of those from Commonwealth countries who laid down their lives in service. It will also establish a dedicated space within the memorial where individuals from Commonwealth backgrounds can pay their respects – a place they can call their own.

The Guest of Honour, The Duke of Gloucester, will be joined by the Lord Lieutenant, High Sheriff, High Commissioner representatives, City Mayor, County Chairman, and representatives from all seven Borough and District Councils.

Also in attendance will be sponsors, multifaith religious leaders, and military personnel from the Royal Anglian Regiment, 45 Engineers, and 504 Squadron RAF, alongside civilians with Commonwealth heritage whose relatives served in the World Wars.

Councillor Richard Butler expressed the importance of this tribute, stating: “Their service has helped keep the people of the Commonwealth safe through two world wars and beyond. It is only right and fitting that we honour their memory and acknowledge their selfless acts that protected so many people of all ages and backgrounds.”

Professor Veronica Pickering MBS HAC, Lord-Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire, said: “I welcome the opportunity to dedicate this unique plaque which will mean so much to those whose descendants are British citizens living in the county of Nottinghamshire.”

The ceremony will provide an opportunity for reflection and remembrance, ensuring the contributions of Commonwealth servicemen and women are recognised and honoured for generations to come.
