A man who beat, strangled and threatened to kill his former partner has been jailed.
Dean Kirby, aged 30, subjected his victim to a prolonged ordeal after arguing with her on the evening of 23 December last year.
After returning to her Nottingham home, Kirby punched her to the face, put his hands around her neck and threatened to take her into a bathroom and kill her.
During his violent outburst, he also threw a television at the woman and threatened to cut off her fingers with a pair of bolt croppers.
Nottinghamshire Police were informed after the woman fled her home and used the phone of a passerby to call 999.
Kirby, who has a history of violent offending, initially told officers that he would give them no trouble and that he knew what he had done.
Any sense of cooperation was soon abandoned, however, when he urinated on the floor of his cell and lunged at a police officer.
The officer, who was targeted through the pen inspection hatch in the cell door, had been trying to conduct an interview after Kirkby refused to leave his cell.
After initially pleading not guilty to all charges, Kirby, previously of The Meadows, later pleaded guilty to intentional strangulation, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, common assault, making threats to kill, and two counts of causing criminal damage.
Appearing at Nottingham Crown Court on Monday, he was jailed for 43 months.
He was also handed a restraining order forbidding any further contact with his victim and banning him from entering The Meadows estate.
Another charge of common assault on an emergency worker was left to remain on file after Kirby pleaded not guilty.
Police Staff Investigator Safha Iqbal, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:
“Kirby has a history of violent offending and poses a significant risk to women.
“I am pleased he will now spend a significant amount of time in custody and will thereafter be banned from having any contact with this victim.
“She has shown tremendous courage and resolve throughout this process and can now look to a future free from the man who caused her so much pain.”
