A man who attempted to throw thick green socks into HMP Ranby has been sentenced.
John Bown, of Tichborne Street, Leicester was jailed after pleading guilty at Nottingham Crown Court on Tuesday 3 March 2020.
The 43-year-old was charged with possession of drugs and attempting to throw prohibited items into the prison and has been jailed for 12 months.
The incident happened on 15 February 2018 at HMP Ranby Prison in Retford.
He was seen be an officer who noticed two thick green things hanging out of the jacket arms of which Bown is carrying, now known as two green socks parcels stuffed with items.
Bown then walked back in the direction that he had come from.
The officer pursues Bown for five minutes until he gave up and collapsed on the grass verge where he then detains him.
Bown admitted that he was going to meet someone.
Officers have then seized the two packages and Bown’s phone. Following a further search, it’s discovered that there two packets of tobacco are seized. They also contain a very small amount of suspected Mamba.
Bown admitted that he was due to receive money for his actions.
Police Constable Qivind Merrygold who led the investigation said: “Attempting to smuggle drugs or other items into prison is totally unacceptable.
“Anyone thinking about doing something like this should be under no illusion that we are proactively looking to stop this and bring those involved to justice.”
