Joint investigation commences after house fire and evacuation

Firefighters and Police were called to a property in Portland Street at around 1.15am today (Tuesday 7 December 2021).

It is believed a sofa in the basement had been set alight. A small number of people had to be evacuated, with a few occupants receiving treatment for smoke inhalation. An area was cordoned off while a joint investigation continues into the cause of the fire.

Leigh Holmes, District Manager at Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: “A joint fire and police investigation is ongoing following a property fire in Newark-on-Trent in the early hours of this morning.

“Upon arrival four occupants had evacuated the property, and firefighters went onto rescuing two other occupants.

“Crews will be in the local area this afternoon and on Friday to give reassurance and advice following this incident.”
