Specialist officers found a knife dumped in an alleyway moments after a suspect ran from them.
Members of the force’s knife crime team were on patrol in Radford, Nottingham, around 3pm on Monday (25 August) when they observed a series of suspected drug deals taking place.
After officers approached the group in Hawksley Road one man fled on foot along Maple Street and down an alleyway leading to Noel Street.
As soon as officers had caught up with the suspect and detained him, they searched the alleyway and found a knife wrapped in a makeshift sheath.
During searches of the suspect officers also recovered a quantity of cannabis.
A 35-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession of a knife in a public place and possession of a Class B drug. He has been bailed while investigations continue.
Police Constable Daniel Cresswell, of the knife crime team, said:
“Knife carriers will often look to discard their weapons when they are approached by us as they know how serious the outcome can be.
“This decision obviously shows no regard whatsoever to who might later find the dangerous weapon in the street.
“We are always on the look-out for this happening and will carry out extensive searches after any foot chase.
“This incident has allowed us to take a knife off the streets and investigations will continue.”
