Knife recovered after uninsured driver stopped in Nottingham

An uninsured driver with no licence was arrested after police found a knife in the car he was illegally driving.

Response officers were patrolling the Lenton area when they spotted a black Mazda breaking the 30mph speed limit in Derby Road.

They stopped the car in Lenton Boulevard and gave chase after the driver tried to flee the scene.

The 23-year-old was detained after a short foot chase.

The officers then searched the Mazda and found a small knife, with checks finding the suspect was driving illegally.

He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of possessing a bladed article in a public place, driving without insurance and driving without a licence.

The arrest took place at approximately 5am this morning (3 July).

Inspector Liz Gaskin, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:

“Weapon seizures like this one really illustrate exactly why we carry out our daily patrols.

“By getting out in the community and pulling over a driver who was going too fast, we came across a dangerous weapon that has now been removed from the streets and taken out of harm’s way.

“There is absolutely no excuse for anyone to carry a knife or offensive weapon in public, whether that be a knife or any other type of bladed article.

“Likewise, it is completely unacceptable to drive without insurance or a valid driving licence.

“As was demonstrated in this incident, we take these offences extremely seriously and will continue to patrol local neighbourhoods to keep people safe.”
