Knife seized after electric scooter crash in Nottingham city centre

Police seized a knife and arrested a suspect after being called to an electric bike crash in Nottingham.

Officers attended Goose Gate around 4pm on Sunday (29 December) following reports that the bike had collided with two people in a pedestrianised area.

They discovered the bike rider was injured and lying in the street.

He was taken to hospital and later found to have suffered injuries that are not believed to be life-altering or life-threatening.

Officers recovered the knife nearby after taking statements from members of the public.

An 18-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of possession of a knife in a public place, riding an electric bike without due care and attention, and riding while unfit through drugs.

Inspector Dan Buckle, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:

“Officers at the scene should be commended for recovering this knife and taking it out of harm’s way.

“Electric bikes, as well as electric scooters, can pose a significant risk to other road users, pedestrians, and the riders themselves.

“We have recently targeted areas of the city centre to crack down on the illegal use of these devices, seizing bikes and educating riders about the laws surrounding their use.”

Under current legislation, private e-scooters cannot be ridden on public highways or in public spaces.

Electric bicycles, meanwhile, are legal to use across the country but must not exceed an output of 250 watts or travel faster than 15.5mph.
