Knife seized after van pulled over by police in Nottingham

Police seized a knife after pulling over a van during a routine patrol in Nottingham.

Officers spotted the Transit van in Huntingdon Street around 1.50 am on Saturday (8 March) and carried out checks. When it was discovered that the van was not insured, officers stopped the vehicle in Woodborough Road.

Miroslav Dunka, the driver, got out of the van and was arrested for driving offences. When officers searched the vehicle, they found a knife concealed under a plastic bag in the driver’s side door.

Dunka, aged 45, of Sneinton Dale, Nottingham, pleaded guilty to possession of a knife in a public place, driving while disqualified, and driving without insurance. He was sentenced to 56 days’ imprisonment, suspended for 12 months, when he appeared at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Monday (10 March).

Police Constable Gail Collins, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:

“Thanks to the diligence of officers, this routine stop has allowed us to take a knife off the streets and out of harm’s way.

“Their suspicions about the vehicle were proved to be accurate when searches revealed Dunka was driving around with this weapon within easy reach.

“There is no excuse for carrying a knife in public – whether inside your clothing, in a bag, or concealed in your car or van.”
