The news that Nottinghamshire County Council are closing two care homes, namely Leivers Court in Arnold, and St Michaels View in Retford, has been met by strong opposition by the Labour Group at County Hall.
There was anger over both the closure and the inadvertent way that this was reported in committee a couple of months ago; at this time assurances were given by the Conservative Group that the published dates for closure, which had been released prior to consultation with staff or residents, were merely indicative, and that no closures would be confirmed prior to alternative provision being available.
Currently no alternative Extra Care provision exists in either of these areas.
Councillor Alan Rhodes, Leader of the Labour Group at Nottinghamshire County Council, was outraged by the announcement, and said
“This decision to close Leivers Court and St Michaels is both callous and lacks any compassion, and means that our most vulnerable elderly residents will be evicted to private sector homes against their wishes and the wishes of their families. It has always been Labour Policy not to close homes unless there was Extra Care Provision up and running in the vicinity, and this is not the case here”
