Large knife seized after Nottingham taxi stopped

Police have charged a suspect after stopping a taxi and seizing a knife from inside.

Officers from the city knife crime team were called to the Basford area after receiving intelligence relating to the vehicle.

After spotting the car, the specialist team pulled it over at around 2:55 pm on Thursday (25 May) and carried out a search at the roadside.

This then led to a large knife being discovered in the possession of a person inside the taxi, which was seized along with quantities of cannabis that were also found.

A 17-year-old boy was arrested and later charged with possession of a bladed article in a public place and possession of a Class B drug.

The suspect, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared before Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Friday (26 May).

They were released on bail and are next due to appear before the same court on 28 June 2023.

Sergeant Matt Daley, of Nottinghamshire Police’s city knife crime team, said: “Proactive stop and searches like the one used here play a key part of what we do and are based on recent and relevant intelligence we receive.

“In this instance, we were able to follow this information up and stop a vehicle of interest, where a knife was then seized from inside.

“Taking dangerous weapons off Nottingham’s streets and out of harm’s way is our primary aim as a team, so we’re pleased to have been able to do this and bring a suspect before the courts.”
