The A46 is closed in both directions between the M1 J21A and the A50 near Leicester due to an overturned vehicle carrying livestock.

6:40 pm All lanes have now reopened on the A46 in both directions between M1 J21A and the A50 near Leicester.
There is still approx. 4 miles congestion on the #M1 northbound on approach, causing delays of 20 minutes above usual journey times.

Please be aware, we’re reporting delays in excess of 90 minutes on the M1 northbound approaching the incident on the A46 just off the J21a exit.
There is approx. 10 miles of congestion, please plan ahead if you’re travelling in the area this evening.
All emergency services are working at the scene with Traffic Officers assisting with the strategic closures.
Leicestershire Police have advised there are no times for reopening at this stage.
Diversion Routes:
For the Southbound closures Road users are advised to follow the hollow diamond diversion symbol on road signs
From A46 Groby junction, take the A50 north for 4.5 miles.
At M1 Junction 22, take the first exit and head southbound on the M1 until Junction 21a, where the M1 and A46 converge
For the Northbound closure road users are advised to follow the solid diamond diversion symbol on road signs
At M1 Junction 21A continue on the M1 northbound to Junction 22, then exit right onto A50
southbound and follow for 4.5 miles.

Please be aware that there are severe delays of up to 70 minutes on the M1 northbound on the approach to J21A.
