Live updates: M1 and surrounding routes – two hour traffic delays due to Download Festival

The venue is adjacent to East Midlands Airport and is close to 3 major A roads/motorways and a complex set of junctions between 23A and 24A of the M1.


Localised delays remain |9 pm

National Highways |6:30 pm

there are currently severe delays of at least 2 hours above usual journey times on the following roads:

A453 southbound between the A52 (Clifton) and the M1 J24/A50 (East Midlands Airport).
A453 northbound between the M1 J23A/A42 (East Midlands Airport) and the M1 J24/A50 (East Midlands Airport).

There also delays on the following roads:

A42 northbound between the B5006 (Ashby-de-la-Zouch) and the A453 (Tonge).
M1 southbound J25 to J24.
M1 northbound between J23 and J23A.
Once off the motorways or major A roads listed above there is also several miles of congestion, which is expected to further delay journeys towards the Festival.

If you are attending the Download Festival, when you get within a few miles follow the road signs and the instructions from the organisers rather than your sat nav as they will guide you on the correct route to the correct car park.

The west car park is FULL. Please use north & east car park accessible via M1 J24a.

Major roads in the area including the M1, A42, A50 and A453 are likely to remain busy throughout the day. We’ll use electronic message boards on nearby motorways to advise people of any delays.

SEVERE congestion remains on all approaches to Download Festival delaying journeys by at least 2 hours.

The west car park is FULL. Please use north & east car park accessible via #M1 J24a.

Roads affected by delays: A50 east, A42 north, A453 north & south and M1 north and south.

‘We’re dispatching extra traffic officer patrols and have worked with the event organisers to keep the roads moving as smoothly as possible however there are currently severe delays of at least 2 hours above usual journey times on the following roads:

A453 southbound between the A52 (Clifton) and the M1 J24/A50 (East Midlands Airport).

A453 northbound between the M1 J23A/A42 (East Midlands Airport) and the M1 J24/A50 (East Midlands Airport).
