Liz Truss will be the next UK prime minister after beating Rishi Sunak in the Conservative Party leadership contest.
Truss secured 57% of members votes, Boris Johnson won 66.4% of the vote in 2019, David Cameron polled 67.6% in 2005 and Iain Duncan Smith 60.7% in 2001.
It was a closer result than many commentators expected, with Truss taking 57% of votes cast at the contest.
She will become prime minister tomorrow after Boris Johnson officially resigns at Balmoral.
Ruth Edwards MP for Rushcliffe said:
‘Congratulations to Liz Truss for becoming the new Leader of the Conservative Party and our next Prime Minister.
‘As many of you know, I supported Rishi Sunak, but Liz will have my backing in tackling the big issues facing our country, including energy prices, inflation and the cost of living.
‘The Conservative Party must now unite behind the new Prime Minister and push forward with an ambitious agenda for families, businesses and our country.’
