On Thursday 1 May 2025, local and mayoral elections will take place in many parts of England.
Nottinghamshire County Council elections are being held this year, and residents can vote on the representative they want for their area, see full list below.
In England, county councils are responsible for functions such as roads, transport, social care and education.
Nottinghamshire County Council currently has a single-party Conservative majority.
County Councillors are elected by the people of Nottinghamshire every four years.
Each councillor represents a particular area of the county:
- there are 66 County Councillors in Nottinghamshire
- they represent 56 areas of the county.
Councillors are often members of political parties but they can also be independent.
What do councillors do?
County Councillors:
- use their knowledge and views to help make Council decisions
- represent the interests of the residents in their area
- check the quality of services provided by the County Council
- help local people use County Council services and find information.
They do this by:
- attending full council meetings
- sitting on committees or the Cabinet
- working closely with other agencies that operate in their area
- holding regular surgeries for the public to raise issues or find out information.
What is the political make up of Nottinghamshire County Council now – pre-election 1 May 2025?
Nottinghamshire County Council is currently governed by the Conservative Party
The current composition of the County Council is:
- The Nottinghamshire County Council Conservatives: 34 seats.
- Nottinghamshire County Council Labour Group: 15 seats.
- The Nottinghamshire County Independent Group: 15 seats (this includes a number of independent members and members of groups such as the Ashfield Independents).
- Independent members (Councillor Dr John Doddy and Councillor Stephen Garner): 2 seats.
All 21 county councils were due to hold elections in May 2025. However, in December 2024, the government told councils they could request to postpone their elections “where this will help the area to deliver both reorganisation and devolution to the most ambitious timeframe”. This included councils wishing to join the government’s devolution priority programme to have their first mayoral elections in May 2026, or “who need reorganisation to unlock devolution”.
16 county councils and two unitary authorities requested their elections be postponed. On 5 February, the government announced that elections would be postponed to May 2026 in nine areas (Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex, Thurrock, Surrey, East and West Sussex, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight).
