Loughborough hotel temporarily closed after zero food hygiene rating

A hotel in Loughborough had to temporarily close after food hygiene inspectors found dirty water dripping over food preparation surfaces and no disinfectant on site.

Quorn Country Hotel, a four-star hotel located on Leicester Road, Loughborough, was given the lowest score possible by Charnwood Borough Council (CBC) inspectors who visited in February 2026.

According to inspectors, the hotel had been visited five times in the previous year, which included “complaint investigations”.

Charnwood health inspectors said that “standards each time have been poor”, with the hotel receiving a final written warning before potential legal action.

During this inspection, dirty water was observed dripping from a rusting canopy and from a light fitting over food preparation surfaces, food equipment, and the gas hob and fryer area.

Inspectors said that “adequate steps had not been taken to protect food safety” and, as the hotel didn’t have any sanitiser or disinfectant on site, “the risks at the time could not be controlled”, leading to a “voluntary closure agreement”.

The hotel later reopened after another visit by health officers, with food preparation now being carried out in areas not affected by leaking water, but Quorn Country Hotel bosses were told that the ceiling needed an “urgent and full repair to prevent a recurrence” and to stop any potential mould or dirt from forming.

Charnwood health inspectors also found 11 cartons of semi-skimmed milk with overdue use-by dates, as well as a flooded cellar.

Hotel staff said that the cellar was not being used for hotel drinks and that stock was being held “elsewhere”, but inspectors noted that drinks and kegs were “piped in”.

There were also major cleaning concerns, with inspectors finding that areas “haven’t been cleaned for a significant period”, with dirt and grease being “ingrained and congealed” under cooking equipment and in the bar area.

This also wasn’t the first time the hotel had been pulled up for cleaning concerns, with health bosses saying it was “disappointing to see that it’s once again an issue”.

Health and safety concerns were also raised after the flooring behind the hotel’s bar had “given way”, leaving a hole that was being covered by a wooden sheet. Inspectors told the hotel to get the flooring “fully repaired” and provide proof to prevent a trip hazard for staff.

Inspectors also noted that parts of the kitchen flooring were missing and were “still not repaired”.

The hotel also had a pile of rubbish, including a bed mattress, in the backyard, with hotel chiefs being told to “clear [it] immediately”, especially after inspectors noted “previous rat activity in the boiler room”.
