Diversions are being put in place.
The M1 is closed in both directions between J21 and J20 near Leicester for a vehicle fire. Leicester Fire and Rescue are at the scene with National Highway Traffic Officers assisting with traffic management.
Diversion Route
Road users travelling Northbound are advised to follow the Hollow Square diversion symbol on road signs
- Exit the M1 northbound at J20 and take the first exit onto the A4303.
- Continue along the A4303 to the A4303/A426 roundabout.
- Take the second exit from the roundabout and continue on the A4303.
- Pass through two roundabouts at Coventry Road and Magna Park to the A5/A4303 “Cross in Hand Roundabout”.
- Take the fourth exit and proceed along the A5 northbound.
- Follow the A5 Waitling Street to the A5#M69 J1 interchange.
- At the interchange take the fifth exit onto the M69 northbound.
- Continue on the M69 to J2/M1 J20.
- Re-join the M1 northbound
Road users travelling Southbound are advised to follow the Hollow Square diversion symbol on road signs
- As above Diversion but in reverse

National Highways said at 6pm on 3 October:
’The M1 is closed in both directions between J21 and J20 near Leicester following a car fire.
‘Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service are at the scene and working to deal with the incident.
