Knife crime team officers arrested a teenager and seized a discarded machete while carrying out additional patrols in Nottingham.
The team has been conducting uniformed and plain clothes operations across the city centre and neighbouring areas since the start of March following three knife-crime related incidents.
The specialist officers have now carried out a total of 370 hours of plain clothes and proactive patrols since 1 March.
The latest arrest was made after a teenager ran from police in Huntingdon Street around 12noon on Tuesday (11 March).
After a foot chase officers were able to detain the suspect in Bangor Walk, St Ann’s.
They then recovered a machete from the roadside nearby underneath a parked car.
A 14-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of possession of a knife in a public place.
Police Constable Daniel Cresswell, of the knife crime team, said:
“Every time our specialist team goes on duty the aim is to apprehend suspected knife carriers and take these weapons off the streets.
“Due to recent knife crime-related incidents, and the understandable concern this has caused, we have clocked up many hours of plain clothes patrols to help keep people as safe as possible.
“Knife crime is a policing priority both in Nottinghamshire and nationally so we always seek to charge and remand suspects who have been arrested for possession of a blade.
“Our colleagues will be working hard to achieve this and I hope the public is reassured by our robust response to knife crime in the city.”
