Superintendent Suk Verma, of Nottinghamshire Police, has praised officers for their quick response to the incident.

Supt Verma said: “Response officers did a fantastic job to arrive on the scene within minutes of the call and locate a suspect as part of their initial enquiries.

“While no weapon was recovered, the observation of what is thought to have been a machete being discarded into the River Trent will certainly form part of the investigation into what happened.

“We are committed to ensuring that Nottinghamshire is a safe place to live, work and socialise and we will always take reports of threats of violence and weapons possession very seriously.

“The further report that the suspect spat at an officer while in custody is totally unacceptable and we will be thoroughly investigating this.

“Emergency workers work incredibly hard to protect the public and it is abhorrent to think that anyone would think it is okay to assault those who work to keep us safe.”
