A suspect has been charged after a good spot by police led to the seizure of an extendable baton.
Response officers attended Denman Street East, Radford, following reports of an altercation in the street.
Police noticed someone who aroused their suspicions as they arrived, around 10.30pm on Saturday (22 November).
Searches of the individual were subsequently conducted at the roadside, which resulted in police finding a friction lock baton.
Following the discovery, officers seized the weapon and placed the suspect under arrest.
Abdulrahman Akande, 19, was later charged with possessing an offensive weapon in a public place.
Akande, of Alfreton Road, Radford, has been bailed ahead of an appearance at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on 9 December.
Sergeant James King, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:
“We’re pleased to have been able to take this weapon off the streets and charge a suspect in connection with this offence.
“There is never an excuse for any member of the public to ever carry a friction lock baton out in the community.
“As well as being illegal to carry out on the streets, it is actually a criminal offence in the UK to possess an extendable baton, full stop.
“They are among a select number of weapons, including knuckledusters, samurai swords and zombie knives, that are illegal to be kept in a home or other private setting.
“We will always look to arrest and charge anyone found with any of these weapons, so we’d urge anyone who has any to do the right thing and hand them in.
“The best way to do this is by anonymously disposing of them at one of the knife amnesty bins located at our police stations.”
