Man found asleep near a Nottingham university ‘appeared to be in possession of a gun’

Officers arrived on the scene within minutes and have arrested the man on suspicion of possession of a firearm and possession of an offensive weapon.

A 40-year-old man has been arrested after he was found in possession of a possible firearm.

Nottinghamshire Police received a report just before 5.30pm today (24 August) that a man asleep in Goldsmith Street in Nottingham appeared to be in possession of a gun.

Officers arrived on the scene within minutes and have arrested the man on suspicion of possession of a firearm and possession of an offensive weapon.

Inspector Andy Wright said: “I understand the concern it can cause for people to see a man with what appears to be a firearm.

“However, I would like to reassure the community that our officers acted quickly to ensure that there was no threat to the wider public and to remove the weapon from the man, who is now in police custody.

“The item is now being forensically examined to determine whether or not it is a viable firearm.

“I understand that there may be footage of the item circulating on social media and I would ask people not to jump to conclusions before this incident has been fully investigated.”
