Man in court after police spot fire in a shop doorway

A suspected arsonist has been placed before the courts after police on patrol spotted a fire in a shop doorway.

Officers were in Radford Road, Hyson Green, Nottingham, around 7.40pm on Monday (15 December) when they observed the blaze at a mobile phone store.

Three people, who were inside the shop at the time, were rescued by firefighters and taken to hospital with injuries which are not life-threatening in nature.

Following inquiries, a man was arrested and a joint police and Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service investigation has taken place.

Thirty-five-year-old Rani Bro, of Whitemoor Road, Nottingham, has now been charged with arson with intent to endanger life and possession of a Class C drug.

He appeared at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday (17 December) and was remanded in custody until 14 January 2026.

Detective Constable Rebecca Walker, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:

“The officers who spotted the fire should be commended for their alertness on patrol.

“People were inside the shop at the time so their rapid response may have prevented this incident being even more serious.

“Arson is a reckless offence which can have devastating consequences so I’m pleased a suspect has been placed before magistrates at the earliest opportunity.”
