Man jailed after £5,000 of electrical items stolen from Nottingham students

A burglar who stole thousands of pounds worth of electrical equipment from a student house has been jailed.

Jahya Williams broke into student accommodation in Seely Road, Radford, while all the housemates were out.

They then returned home a few hours later on 17 September 2022, to find that an intruder had ransacked the property.

Around £5,000 worth of items – including laptops, camera equipment and speakers – were all taken by Williams, who then slipped away without being detected.

Officers acting on intelligence were able to link Williams to the break-in and he was arrested at his home on 23 September.

After initially answering “no comment” to all the questions put to him during police interview, the 35-year-old later pleaded guilty to the burglary charge.

None of the stolen items have yet been recovered.

Williams, of Radford Boulevard, appeared before Nottingham Crown Court on 28 October, where he was sentenced to two years and four months in prison.

Detective Constable Louise Jackson, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Williams showed a complete disregard for the law when he chose to break into this property.

“As well as stealing thousands of pounds worth of items that didn’t belong to him, his actions also left the students affected feeling weary about leaving their belongings unattended at the address again.

“We understand both the financial and emotional ramifications burglaries can have on people, which is why we have dedicated teams of detectives who focus on cases of this nature.

“Everyone should have the right to feel safe within the walls of their own home and shouldn’t have to worry about intruders entering their personal space.

“Sadly however, incidents of this nature do happen, which is why we’d always encourage people to remain vigilant of burglars and ensure doors and windows are locked when they’re not home.

“We’re pleased to see Williams is now facing the consequences of his actions and we hope he puts his time in prison to good use by revaluating how he’s living his life.”
