A man who repeatedly punched and kicked an unconscious man in Mansfield Market Place has been jailed.
Aiden Tyler, aged 25, approached the man near the Bentinck Memorial shortly before 4.45pm on Wednesday 31 December 2025 and launched an unprovoked assault.
As his 35-year-old victim lay defenceless on the floor, Tyler, in full view of multiple witnesses, rained down dozens of punches to his head and upper body.
He then got up and kicked his unconscious victim in the head before yelling a series of insults and claiming the man was dead.
Earlier in the afternoon, Tyler had punched a man in the face after knocking at the door of a house in Lord Street.
Shortly before that, he had been involved in another incident at a pub where he had threatened violence to customers.
Tyler, who has multiple previous convictions for violence, was arrested in the Market Place and later declined to answer any of the questions put to him by officers.
His main victim was treated in hospital for serious head injuries and was later released.
Tyler was later charged with attempted murder and remanded into custody.
Ahead of a scheduled trial in June, Tyler, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to wounding with intent.
He also pleaded guilty to a separate charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm against his second victim, and to affray in relation to the pub incident on the same day.
Appearing at Nottingham Crown Court on Tuesday 25 August, he was jailed for nine years and six months.
Detective Constable Amelia Hicklin, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:
“This was a savage and sustained display of violence carried out in full view of multiple members of the public.
“Tyler would have known his victim was unconscious but continued to rain down blow after blow to his head.
“He is a violent thug with a history of violence and can count himself lucky that his victim wasn’t more seriously hurt.
“I am pleased he has now been given this extended sentence and that he can pose no further threat to the public.”
