Man jailed for over seven years for sexual offences against children

A sexual predator who took explicit photos of children and sexually assaulted a 12-year-old has been jailed.

Matthew Barber, 28, also posed as a school pupil to convince a 15-year-old girl to send an explicit video of herself to him.

Nottinghamshire Police received information that Barber had been accessing indecent images online from his home.

Barber was arrested and subsequent enquiries identified he had taken images of a girl while she slept and had sexually assaulted her.

Police investigating the images arrested Barber, of Russell Street in Loughborough in June last year.

The 28-year-old pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children, sexually assaulting a child and inciting a child to engage in sexual activity at Nottingham Crown Court on 18 February 2021.

Yesterday (Tuesday 29 June), he was jailed for seven-and-a-half years.

The detective leading the investigation, Detective Sergeant John Whitworth, said: “Barber’s actions were insidious, deceptive and dangerous.

“A thorough investigation into the images led us to him and thanks to hard work from officers and staff involved, we were able to secure guilty pleas for all charges.“I am pleased with the strong sentence that has been given and I hope that it brings some closure for his victims, who will each be offered support by specially trained officers.

“Sexual crimes against children are among the most reprehensible possible and we will always thoroughly investigate reports with a view to taking action against offenders.

“We balance this with providing care appropriate for victims and dealing with matters as sensitively as possible.

“We understand and acknowledge how hard it is for people to report these types of offences and I would like to praise the victims for their bravery throughout this case.”
