Man jailed for repeatedly stabbing his friend in Nottingham

Police arrested a violent offender within an hour of a knife attack in Nottingham.

Mohamed Gawi confronted the victim in Norton Street, Radford, before producing a knife, swinging the weapon repeatedly and stabbing him.

The man, who was known to Gawi, suffered a partially collapsed lung due to a knife wound to his armpit and a laceration to his hand following the incident on 3 May 2025.

Officers located 26-year-old Gawi in his flat in Egypt Road a short time later and he was charged following further investigations by detectives.

Gawi pleaded guilty to committing grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of a knife in a public place.

At Nottingham Crown Court on Thursday (23 October) he was jailed for a total of four years and 11 months.

The court heard the victim and Gawi, who had known each other for around seven years and played football together, had been drinking and socialising together the previous day.

Gawi returned to the man’s flat and attacked him in the street as he walked out of the door around 8.30pm.

The sustained assault lasted for three minutes, during which Gawi held the knife to the victim’s neck three times, before he grabbed the man’s phone and ran away.

As he fled, Gawi was caught on CCTV throwing a knife into a garden and officers were later able to recover the weapon.

When they arrested Gawi a short time later officers recovered blood-stained clothing he had worn in the attack and two further blades.

The victim was taken to hospital and required surgery for the injuries to his hand.

The court was told the victim still feels scared and anxious whenever he leaves his home and continues to suffer pain from his injuries.

Detective Constable Octavia Watson, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:

“Gawi chose to attack a man he knew and had been socialising with only a day earlier.

“The attack was sustained and violent, and could very easily have resulted in even more serious injury.

“It was also carried out in a very public setting with cars and people passing by and able to witness the violence unfold.

“Anyone carrying a knife in Nottingham needs to be aware the city is very well policed and also covered by an excellent network of CCTV cameras.

“If you carry a knife you will end up being arrested and we will do everything in our power to ensure you are locked up.”
