Man who choked and punched former partner sentenced to three years in prison

A man who choked his former partner has been jailed.

Cameron Ashley, aged 24, flew into a rage during an argument on 22 March this year, during which he placed both hands around her neck and restricted her breathing.

On 14 April, he subjected the same young woman to another sustained assault at his home in Highlander’s Hill, Mansfield, during which he also punched her in the face.

Much of that incident was witnessed by a friend of the victim, who was able to record some of what happened on her phone.

Other images showing extensive bruising from a previous assault were later sent to the police.

Ashley was arrested three days later at a hotel in Newark, where the victim had gone to meet him.

Ashley gave mostly “no comment” answers in his police interview, even when confronted with audio evidence of him threatening his victim.

He then argued with officers when they informed him they were seeking a Domestic Violence Protection Notice (DVPN), forbidding him from further contact with his victim.

Before his scheduled trial in September, Ashley pleaded guilty to one count of intentional strangulation and one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

He also admitted engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour. Additional charges of assault and intentional strangulation were left to lie on file.

Ashley also admitted a public order offence after abusing and threatening two police officers during a previous incident.

Appearing at Nottingham Crown Court on Wednesday, 10 March, Ashley was jailed for a total of three years and two months. He was also made subject to an indefinite restraining order, forbidding him from any future contact with the victim or her friend.

PC Simon Wragg, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:

“Ashley is a violent bully who subjected this young woman to the most appalling violence.

“He clearly has little control over his temper, particularly when under the influence of alcohol, and poses a significant risk to young women.

“I am pleased in this case that the victim will receive the ongoing protection of a restraining order – any breach of which may lead Ashley straight back to prison.

“As this case draws to a close, I urge other women experiencing this kind of abuse behind closed doors to come forward and tell us about it so we can take similar action.”
