‘Mandate delivered to say no to joining a new Nottingham City Council’ says councillor

Residents in Rushcliffe have sent a strong message that they do not wish to join a new Nottingham City Council, is the view of West Bridgford South Cllr Jonathan Wheeler.

Cllr Wheeler who was one of eight Conservative Councillors to be elected in Rushcliffe on Thursday for Nottinghamshire County Council.

Against a national trend of Conservative Councillors losing their seats, the Conservatives retained the same number they finished the last Council term on, and a key pledge of their manifesto was to campaign to stay out of Nottingham City Council, something which Cllr Wheeler says with the number one issue on the doorstep.

Cllr Wheeler said:

‘After knocking on thousands of doors in the last few months I can tell you the overwhelming majority of people do not want to join a new Nottingham City Council and see Rushcliffe Borough Council.

‘The election results are a clear message and mandate, and it is time the Government listened and scrapped this ridiculous idea.

‘We will continue to fight any plans to join the city, and will call on the new Reform administration to reject any attempts to join a new city council be to join or calls for a public referendum on the issue.

‘Finally I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who voted for Local Conservatives in the election, we will continue to stand up for residents and hold the new Reform administration to account on delivering  the promises they made to the electorate.’
