A police stop-and-search has led to dangerous weapons being taken off the streets and a man admitting to carrying a knife and sharpened screwdriver.
A 28-year-old man of no fixed address was found to have the items in his possession on Redcliffe Road, Mapperley Park, after being stopped by officers following reports of a man carrying a weapon in the area.
Cannabis was also discovered in his possession following the stop-and-search on Sunday 16 January, with the suspect insisting that he had the knife and screwdriver on him to cut a carpet at home and to repair his mobile phone.
After being arrested and charged with possession of a Class B substance, a bladed article, and an offensive weapon, he was remanded in custody and appeared before Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Monday 17 January, where he pleaded guilty to the charges.
He was bailed to appear before Nottingham Crown Court for sentencing on 21 February.
Sergeant James Rimmington, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Thanks to the quick actions of Nottinghamshire Police officers, we have been able to take two potentially dangerous weapons off our streets and put a suspect before the courts.
“We have two dedicated knife crime teams focused solely on keeping everyone in our communities safe and stop-and-searches like the one used in this case play an invaluable role in helping us to do just that.
“It is important that the public know that it is illegal to carry knives and that, whatever people might think, they won’t protect you from harm but will actually make you much more vulnerable and liable to end up in danger.”
