A martial arts fighter who left a vulnerable man with a bleed on the brain following a pub assault has been sentenced.
Kanan Scotney punched the victim once to the face in a random attack in the beer garden of the pub in St James’s Street, Nottingham.
The victim fell backwards, striking his head on a table before falling to the floor.
Scotney walked away from the smoking area and left the pub without checking on the man’s well-being following the incident, which took place around 10.30pm on 16 August 2023.
He returned a short time later to search for a bracelet he had lost during the attack.
The victim, who had a serious existing health condition, was taken to hospital where it was discovered he had suffered a bleed on the brain.
Scotney, aged 30, of Hereford Road, Nottingham, was jailed for 16 months suspended for two years when he appeared at Nottingham Crown Court on Tuesday (8 October)
He had previously admitted inflicting grievous bodily harm without intent.
Detective Sergeant Simon Carter, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:
“Officers found the victim extremely disoriented when they arrived at the pub.
“He was also worried about an existing medical condition following this unprovoked and violent assault.
“Scotney may not have been intending to cause the injuries he did but is a powerfully built man who is trained in martial arts.
“Just one punch can become a life-changing event for both the offender and the victim and given the latter’s vulnerabilities in this case it is fortunate he was not even more seriously hurt.
“Violence of this nature has no place in our night time economy and will always be met with a robust response from the force.”
