Masked group chasing people along Nottinghamshire street leads to drugs and weapons arrests

Drugs, weapons, and two suspects were rounded up by officers within minutes of a call coming in about disorder in Retford.

A group wearing balaclavas and carrying weapons reportedly chased people along Forest View before smashing a property’s window.

This reportedly took place around 3 p.m. on Tuesday (22 October), with a member of the public then calling the police around an hour later.

A car matching the description of one involved in the incident was spotted by officers soon afterwards while they carried out an area search.

When police turned their car around to follow the vehicle, it was immediately abandoned in Trent Bridge Road, while its occupants ran from the scene.

Officers chasing behind them on foot caught up with two suspects and put them both in handcuffs.

After retracing their steps back to the abandoned vehicle, they searched it and recovered a large bag of cannabis inside, along with a claw hammer and a cricket bat.

The suspects – men aged 19 and 21 – were both arrested on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon in public, possessing with intent to supply Class B drugs, and affray.

Things then got worse for the 19-year-old man when he was identified as a suspect in a burglary in Lime Tree Avenue, Retford, where car keys, a handbag, and a laptop were taken.

Two vehicles were subsequently stolen from the driveway. Both cars were later recovered, although one was found burnt out several days later.

The 19-year-old suspect was additionally arrested for that burglary, along with driving without a licence or insurance.

Sergeant Nick Bradley, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:

“This incident provided a great example of our Operational Support teams working together to get a good result in rapid time.

“Within minutes of a call coming in from the public about suspected disorder, our officers had already travelled to the scene and located a vehicle we believed to be involved.

“That rapid response ultimately resulted in us being able to detain two suspects, following a short foot chase, and recover drugs as well as two offensive weapons from the car.

“We were also able to arrest one of the suspects for a separate break-in, thanks to the force’s burglary team identifying him as a suspect in that case.

“Our Armed Policing Team and Dog Unit, ably supported by the neighbourhood policing teams, all played a role in us making these two arrests and securing this good result.”
