Four people were arrested after a member of the public led officers to a stolen car.
Police were called shortly before 9pm last night (Tuesday) when a group of masked suspects were reported to be changing the number plates on a car in the Hawton Road area of Newark.
The car was later tracked by ANPR cameras to an address in Derby and four people were detained.
Further investigations revealed the car had been stolen two days earlier from another address in Newark.
The number plate had been stolen hours earlier from the car park at Newark Northgate Station.
Three 24-year-old men and a 17-year-old girl were arrested on suspicion of theft and remain in police custody. One of the men was also arrested on suspicion of driving whilst disqualified and driving with no insurance. All four remain in police custody.
Sergeant Dave Nicholson, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “This was a great bit of work from police officers and staff – all made possible by the very keen eye of a member of the public. Their vigilance in this case led us directly to a stolen car and four suspects.
“I would like to thank them for phoning this in and would encourage other members of the public to do the same when they see something suspicious.”
