Rushcliffe Mayor Cllr Mrs Maureen Stockwood was delighted to attend resident Mrs Sheila Martin’s special 100th birthday party at Westdale Care Home in West Bridgford.

The Mayor presented Mrs Martin with a bouquet of chrysanthemums, roses and phlox flowers and a congratulatory card.

She said: “I was so happy to meet Sheila and join her in celebrating this amazing milestone.
“It was an honour to meet her and to listen to stories from her time as a staff nurse during World War Two.

“On behalf of Rushcliffe Borough Council I would like to wish her a very Happy Birthday and many happy returns.”

Mrs Martin was joined by her son Keith and his wife Jenny, her grandson-in-law Joe and great-grandsons Eli and Malachi.

She said: “I was so happy that the Mayor could attend my special birthday, it made the day even more wonderful for me.

“I would also like to thank her for my flowers and card which are beautiful!”

Born in Ireland, Mrs Martin came to England aged 17 to train as a nurse and married her first husband Graham in 1942 where they had three children together.

Following Graham’s death in 1989, she studied Fine Art at Amersham College which became a lifelong interest, with lots of her pictures now hung at Westdale Care Home.

Aged 75, she married her second husband John who she met at Quaker Meetings in Somerset but unfortunately was widowed one year after they married.

Mrs Martin lived in Leicester before following her son Keith to Nottingham in 2012 having researched care homes herself, choosing one founded by the Quakers.
Along with her three children, Mrs Martin has seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren, with family also living in Australia that she keeps in touch with via Skype.
